A Perfect Map
2024A map is a reference to a space that is outside of it.
From a Pataphysical perspective, mapmaking is an act of reappropriating, and therefore doubling, space through the lens of the imaginary. Jorge Luis Borges’s (1899) on several occasions accuses mirrors of multiplying space while at the same time, being inherently referential, holding no content of their own. I decided to create a map that does little but refer.
Imagine, a 15x15x0,07 cm sliver of space.
These dimensions in theory could hold a sliver, or, in rare occasions, the entirety of a designated space. Moving this 15x15x0,07 cm sliver of space provides a version of that by subdividing existing space through the lens of these dimensions.
Within ‘A perfect map’ I decided to create a stationary 15x15x0,07 cm sliver of space that would deliver the same, or at the very least relative, results. Not theoretically, not if you imagine, but right before your eyes two mirrors of the exact same surface, referencing each other into infinity.
In short; With great fascination, I present the back of two mirrors. This work has been developed in collaboration with Pedro Navas (Master of Arts in Philosophy, 2000) and Daan Verburg (Master of Arts in Metaphysics, 1997), whose academic insights have expanded its conceptual depth.
